Runners are being encouraged to attend an event to mark the launch of this year's Perkins Great Eastern Run at the Peterborough Marriott Hotel at Peterborough Business Park, Lynch Wood, on Tuesday 26 February 2013, at 11am.

The launch event is being hosted by the Marriott hotel on behalf of the race's principal sponsors Perkins. Runners will be able to enter the Perkins Great Eastern Run half marathon, fun run or wheelchair race and local running club representatives will also be attending the event to offer running and training advice.

Other Perkins Great Eastern Run sponsors at the event include: Advance Performance, Barclays, Smiths Motor Group, Sainsbury's, Ron Hill and ChromaSport & Trophies.

People attending will be shown a short film of last year's Perkins Great Eastern Run, which attracted a record number of competitors with more than 5,500 entries. There will also be an opportunity to find out more about free training sessions for runners of all levels and experience and choosing the right running gear for training and race day.

The half marathon and fun run route has remained unchanged from the 2012 course and the race will once again start and finish on the city's Embankment.

This year's Perkins Great Eastern Run takes place on Sunday 13 October and some of the UK's top elite runners will be challenging for first place. First man home in 2012 was Luka Rotich in 62mins 25secs, which was just outside the Perkins Great Eastern Run best of 62.16 set two years ago.

The event also attracts hundreds of non-competitive runners into the fun run, which covers a distance of 5k. Young runners are being encouraged to take part in this year's fun run by taking part in the Junior Challenge.

The junior school, club or organisation that raises the most money for local charity Anna's Hope will win a team kit from ChromaSport & Trophies worth £500. A television, courtesy of Sainsbury's, will be won by the junior school, club or organisation that enters the most children.

Sainsbury's are also donating a Wii game each for the boy and girl who raise the most money for Anna's Hope.

Annette Joyce, Race Director for Peterborough City Council, said: "I encourage anyone intending to enter this year's race to come to the launch event. There will be a host of running advice available and it will be great opportunity to talk to running clubs and race organisers about every aspect of the race from running shoes and charities to parking and prizes.
